For women and men who are looking for natural solutions and remedies to all sorts of emotional and physical health issues, looking to the basics of essential oils is a must. Made purely from natural ingredients of plants, essential oils provide a vast range of health benefits and can be applied topically, diffused into the air, or even ingested orally in some cases. Here’s a look at what essential oils are, how to use them, and descriptions for a few of the most common and best essential oils on the market today.
What Are Essential Oils?
Although the word “essential” implies that they are needed, and arguably this could be considered true for many sold-out users, the word technically refers to the “essence of”. Essential oils hydrophobic liquids which are created from the parts of plants: petals, leaves, stems, berries, peel, and even bark. These plant parts are distilled or pressed and extracted in order to create an extremely concentrated liquid. Almost any type of plant can be made into an essential oil, but there are very many that have been known for many years to be most effective when used either alone or blended together.
Uses for Essential Oils
An exhaustive list of essential oil benefits might read more like an encyclopedia (grab our FREE eBook here), but suffice it to say that if you have an ailment or struggle, you are likely to find an essential oil to address it. Of course, as with most natural remedies, essential oils are very potent and you should check with your doctor before using them if you are taking certain medications, have certain allergies, or if you have certain conditions such as high blood pressure. Some essential oils can have a negative impact, or even be toxic, if not used properly and in safe amounts. That said, there is so much to learn about the benefits and uses of essential oils, and the main three are:
- household use
- topical application
Household Uses for Essential Oils
So many cleaners and other household products come with questionable ingredients that could harm our families, but using essential oils can help us rest assured that our households are clean and safe. Many essential oils, such as tea tree (melaleuca) or lavender, contain antimicrobial properties which kill germs and viruses naturally. Mixing essential oils with other natural carriers, such as white vinegar or water, they can be applied directly with a towel or used in spray bottles. Essential oils can also be diffused into the air to make for the cleanest and healthiest home possible.
Topical Application of Essential Oils
Because essential oils have micro molecules, they are quite easily absorbed through the skin to provide the maximum benefit of the oils. Essential oils are so small that they can cross the blood-brain barrier, which gives them the most direct impact on the body’s health. Because most essential oils are too concentrated (and too expensive!) to use directly and only a few drops are usually needed, they are typically added to a mild (and less expensive) carrier oil such as Coconut oil or Sweet Almond oil. This can be massaged directly onto the affected muscles or skin areas, and can even be used on the abdomen to impact internal organs which are in need.
An essential oil may be used alone to address specific needs, but they are often more useful when blended together to gain the beneficial properties of several essential oils together. For instance, peppermint and lavender may be combined as a massage oil because peppermint provides relief to tired muscles and opens the breathing passages, while lavender is relaxing and is an antioxidant to rid the body of toxins.
Aromatherapy with Essential Oils
Health for the body and for the mind are very closely connected and aromatherapy seeks to address both of these factors. Essential oils which are diffused into the air (typically a few drops are mixed with water in a humidifying diffuser) can provide the mind with a variety of mental health benefits. Citrus essential oils such as lemon, orange, or grapefruit may be used in aromatherapy to provide energy and awaken the mind while lavender or chamomile may be diffused to relieve stress and help with relaxation. Ylang ylang is thought to help balance the hormones, and the list goes on and on.
Inhalation is a more direct form of aromatherapy which can be used to benefit the health. Rather than pouring any drops out, you can simply open the bottle of essential oil and take a deep breath through your nose in order to gain the benefits. Or it is also effective to place one drop on the hands, rub them together, and gently sniff. More than simply the joy of smelling something nice, most essential oils can have a deep impact on the brain, whether to stimulate it when tired or relax it in times of stress. Because the olfactory center of the brain is near the limbic center, essential oils can prompt the brain to greatly influence the emotions.

Essential Oil Carrier Oils
Because essential oils are so very concentrated, you only need to use a few drops for maximum effectiveness. Most of the time if you are applying essential oils to the skin they are too strong to apply directly, so it is necessary (and more affordable!) to dilute them into an oil that can “carry” them. Coconut, Avocado, Sweet Almond, and Grapeseed are some of the many carrier oils that are preferred to be used with essential oils. These particular 4 are very popular and can be purchased together at a great bargain on Amazon!
There are lots of different carrier oils that are made from plants that can also be used. Click the button below to learn much more about carrier oils (what to use and what to avoid). Plus – view our extensive list of carrier oils and choose one (or more) that you think will be suitable for you!
